Stand Up Against Street Harassment

Alone we can’t shift the culture — but together — our actions matter. Be part of the change to Stand Up Against Street Harassment.

All across the United States, girls, women, and transgender and gender non-binary individuals experience street harassment simply because of their gender identity or gender expression every day. Gender discrimination in society is a huge issue that needs to be addressed and we all have a responsibility to do something about it, but too often we freeze. We don’t know what to do. That’s where bystander intervention training comes in.

When we intervene, we don’t just reduce trauma for the person being street harassed, we also start to chip away at the sexist culture that allows gender bias, gender inequality, and harassment to be so prevalent.

With the support of Right To Be, L’Oréal Paris, the NYC Commission on Gender Equity, and the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence, we have a historic opportunity to train 20,000 people before the end of 2022 in how to intervene when they see street harassment.

Training Description
What will you learn?

There are several questions that you may be asking yourself. For instance, what is gender-based discrimination? What are examples of sexual harassment and gender discrimination? How many people have experienced sexual harassment? Can men be sexually harassed? What can I do against harassment and how can I be better informed?

Right To Be is offering this free, one-hour, interactive training to train people on how to safely intervene when you witness street harassment — or experience it yourself — to better inform you and address any questions you have. During this training you’ll learn a clear, adaptable, and expert-approved set of tools that have been proven to reduce the prevalence of street harassment: Right To Be’s 5Ds of bystander intervention.

We’ll start by deepening our understanding of street harassment and its impact. Then, we’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll also talk about what to do if you’re worried the violence will turn on you and how to avoid escalating the situation.

Finally, we’ll talk about what to do if you experience harassment and give you tools to safely get your power back.

We’ll have time at the end for practice. Exit polls show 98.8% of attendees leave the training feeling like there is at least one thing they can do the next time they witness harassment.

The International Movement
Changing Culture in the USA and around the world

We know the movement to end harassment is important to all of us, regardless of nationality. That’s why we’ve worked with L’Oréal Paris and partner organizers around the world to expand this campaign. We’ve trained facilitators in over 22 countries to make a difference in all communities.

If you live in Canada, we encourage you to sign up for a free public training by our Right To Be Canada partners. The Stand Up Against Street Harassment training is the same one-hour interactive virtual experience and some of the sessions are offered in French.
