67% of People Have Used Bystander Intervention Strategies in the Workplace After Taking Right To Be’s Training

NEW YORK– A nine-month study conducted by Germain Impact Solutions revealed that the Bystander Intervention in the Workplace training, created by Right To Be (formerly Hollaback!), led to real-world actions, with 67% of attendees reporting applying the bystander intervention skills they learned after witnessing a situation of harassment.

The goal of the training is to reduce instances of workplace harassment through the use of Right To Be’s proven 5Ds methodology – Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, and Direct. Many respondents reported using these strategies more than once – in fact, two people reported having used the skills over 20 times since the training.

According to the study, Right To Be’s training provided participants with strong knowledge and understanding of the problem of harassment. For example, 80% of people said that they better understood the spectrum of violence, thanks to the training, and 90% said that they were more aware of the impacts of harassment and/or disrespect.

“This study demonstrates that bystander intervention is a powerful and effective tool for combatting harassment and disrespect in the workplace. If taking only one Right To Be training can lead 67% of people to intervene in situations of harassment — imagine what would happen if we went even deeper in workplaces to build a culture where bystander intervention was the norm,” said Emily May, President, Co-Founder, and Lead Executive Officer of Right To Be.

Participants reported feeling more equipped to respond to harassment after learning the 5Ds methodology. 87% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the 5Ds gave them the tools they needed to respond to harassment/ disrespect and 88% still remembered the 5Ds even six months after the training.

The study also highlighted some of the long-term impacts of the training on the company culture. Participants said the training gave them a “shared language and a framework that facilitated meaningful conversations and built a feeling of camaraderie.” These results remind us once again that bystander intervention is a way to turn our empathy and the care we have for each other into simple, creative, and effective action, reducing harm along the way. Our mission to end harassment using bystander intervention isn’t something new, but it’s something that we can all make normal together.

This report was made possible through the support of RALIANCE: a national partnership dedicated to ending violence in one generation. RALIANCE was created with seed funding from the National Football League. In 2022, RALIANCE awarded Right To Be funding to support bystander intervention training research. The report was completed after analyzing quantitative and qualitative data, including existing training data, follow-up surveys to all training participants, as well as 1:1 and focus group discussions at workplaces.
